Chapter 1:

Why Do I Feel Lost in Life and What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life?

1. Trying to Multi-Task

Our minds cannot multitask. Multitasking needs decision-making, which is tough on our brain resources. With many responsibilities, it is easy to feel tired and lost in life.

What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life
  1. Turn off notifications on your phone to limit distractions.
  2. Stop “just checking” your phone. This makes you lose the sense of time.
  3. Be conscious of how you use your time You can also track how you spend your time on your phone.
  4. You can set your schedule and inform people about it. So, they will not disturb you unless it is urgent.
  5. Give yourself a break.
2. Busy to Spend Time on What’s Important to You

If you enjoy your work then you will not feel stressed. If you are busy with boring routines, you are also too busy to do anything you love. This also might make you feel lost and as if something is missing.

What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life
  • Try to find what’s important to you. Ask yourself why you’re not doing those things that once made you happy anymore?
  • Make sure to set aside time for activities that make you feel good regularly.
  • Reconnect with your creativity. e.g. art or craft.
  • Stay flexible with open plans.

3. Comparing Yourself to Others

We always want to be “ideal” and “perfect”. We compare ourselves to people who we think are best. Negative talks such as “Who do I think I’m” or “I can’t” bring us down. This can also make us feel lost.

What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life
  • Remind yourself that no one is perfect.
  • Instead of comparing look at your progress and when due, appreciate how far you’ve come.
  • Unfollow people who don’t add any value or make you feel bad.

4. You Don’t Know or Love Yourself
Many people feel lost because they do not know themselves enough. They don’t know who they are or have opinions about important issues. Many do not want to be alone since they don’t want to be alone with their thoughts. To perceive yourself as not good enough, makes you focus on everything that is “missing” or things you could have done better. This can also make you feel lost.
What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life
  • Reflect on your values. Decide for yourself what you think is important.
  • Attend events or meet people that make you excited.
  • Learn how to appreciate and take care of yourself.
  • Become aware of thoughts. Everything your mind tells you is not true.

5. Caring Too Much about Others’ Opinions

Many people value the opinions of others more than their own. They also want to meet the expectations set by others. Eventually, they end up living their life on someone else’s terms. Trying to forcefully live up to other people’s expectations and not being able to do so can make you question why you are even trying. This can also make you feel lost.

What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life
  • Living up to others’ standards is hard and not needed. You will never get there and not be happy.

  • Be true to yourself. Accept your flaws.
  • Set realistic expectations. Ask yourself- What kind of life do I want to live?

6. Having Limited Beliefs and Avoid Taking Action
How we look at ourselves shows how our progress would be. Having negative beliefs such as “I always fail” makes you feel low. Blaming the external factors for the current state is also common. Using reasons to stay in your comfort zone, and not taking responsibility for your own life, can make you feel lost.
What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life
  • Observe your beliefs. Any belief such as, you cannot do it or how things ‘should be’ need to be discarded.

  • You have a choice in every situation. You can change how you view things.
  • Set a clear goal for the future and create a plan to get there. However, be present and enjoy life on the way.
  • Try to see failure as a learning experience.
  • Push yourself to new experiences.
7. Spending Time with Toxic People

Spending time with the wrong people is another reason to feel lost. People who always complain and criticize do not help you grow. In general, people who spread negativity, don’t add any value to your life. Spending time with such people will affect you over time.

What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life
  • Review the kind of people you spend time with.
  • Observe how you feel after spending time with someone.
  • If you see the toxic signs then plan to stay away from the person.
  • Invest in self-love.
8. Trying to Control Everything

Trying to control everything and everyone is tiring. It saps your energy and it is easy to feel lost when things don’t end up the way you wanted it to be.

What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life

  • Understand what makes you control. Most people control because of fear.
  • Practice acceptance. Be open to any changes in the plans.
  • Let go of your need to always control everything that happens to you and around you.
  • Traveling is a great way to open up your mind and a quick way to learn that everything works at its own pace.
9. Overthinking
Overthinking about how life would be is exhausting. It consumes your energy and makes you feel anxious. This can also result in feeling lost in life.
What to Do When Feeling Lost in Life
  • It’s ok to feel lost sometimes. It can be the first step in creating the life that you want.
  • Motivate yourself to take new experiences. Often it’s better to just get started and figure things out. This helps to stop overthinking.
  • Notice if you overanalyze. Later, practice stopping this.
